Teen Dental Care Tips

The American Dental Association offers great teen dental care tips for pre-teens and teens. Check out their website for these great tips and more. http://www.mouthhealthy.org/en/Teens/

Cavities: They aren't just for little kids. You can get them at any age. When you eat sugary foods or drink soda, juice or energy drinks, you put yourself at risk for tooth decay and gum disease. To keep your teeth healthy, brush twice a day and floss once daily.

Sports: It's all fun and games until someone loses a tooth! Always wear a mouth guard when you play sports.

Fresh breath: No one likes stinky breath. Brushing your teeth twice and day, for at least two minutes each time, and flossing once a day helps keep your breath fresh. Regular dental check-ups and cleanings keep your breath fresh, too!

Braces: They do more than straighten your teeth. They correct bad bites and align your smile! They also boost your self-confidence.

Risks: Don't smoke. Smoking gives you bad breath and stains your teeth and tongue. (Gross!) It has also been proven to cause gum disease and oral cancer. Don't pierce your lips, tongue or any part of your mouth. The Academy of General Dentistry (AGD) has determined that tongue piercing has resulted in chipped teeth, infections, nerve and gum damage, drooling, taste loss and tooth loss. The jewelry used in piercing can also result in periodontal disease and oral cancer.

Regular dental check-ups: A check-up every six months is recommended in order to prevent cavities and other dental problems. However, your dentist will tell you when and how often you should visit. Regular dentist appointments can detect small problems before they become bigger and more painful.

Be a smart mouth with it comes to your teeth!
